: Organelles
Organelles are small structures within cells that perform specific functions. The nucleus, for example, contains a cell's chromosomes, while mitochondria are the site of cellular respiration.

Crawling Amoeba, organelles labeled
Normally clear, this pond-dwelling Amoeba proteus has been stained with a pH-dependent dye. The cellular machinery that enables the amoeba to crawl in search of food is very similar to the machinery that our own cells use to move.
Amoebae stained with a pH-dependent dye were mounted in pondwater between a slide and coverslip using a silicon spacer. The movie was taken on an compound inverted microscope using a 20x objective and digital camera.
